Traditionally, dental implants are done in three steps.

The first would be the extraction of the diseased tooth followed by possible bone grafting. Not all patients will require this step but the dentist will evaluate your case. 

Step two will occur 3-4 months after the first step and the evaluation is complete. Once the dentist determines you are ready, the implant post will be placed. The healing process is at least 3-4 months before your second evaluation will occur.

Step three consists of the final completion of the dental implant. After your second evaluation, the dentist will start the process to prepare your abutment and crown to complete this procedure and finalize your dental implant.

Cases do vary and some implants may be placed on the same day as the extraction. The dentist may recommend the need for a temporary crown to be placed while the implant process is finished. This is determined by the dentist and patient on a case by case basis.
